What to Prepare Before Hiring a Web Designer

A little preparation can make a website project faster and better. Gather these items before you hire a web designer or start…

You do not need to have every sentence written before hiring a web designer. But a little preparation can save time, reduce revisions, and help the finished website feel more like your business.

Know the main goal of the website

Decide what you want visitors to do. Call? Request a quote? Buy something? Book an appointment? Join a membership? A website can support several goals, but one or two should be clearly more important than the rest.

List your services and priorities

Write down the services or products that matter most. If one service drives most of your revenue, the website should not bury it under a long list of smaller offerings.

Gather your logo and brand assets

Send the best-quality logo files you have. Include brand colors, fonts, style guides, or examples of materials you already use. If the brand is changing, say that early so the website is not built around something you plan to replace.

Collect real photos when possible

Photos of your team, location, work, products, or customers can make a small business site feel much more credible. Good stock photography can fill gaps, but real images often create stronger trust.

Write down websites you like

You do not need to find a site you want copied. A few examples can help explain whether you prefer clean and minimal, bold and visual, traditional, luxury, playful, or something else.

Prepare proof

Testimonials, certifications, years in business, review counts, project results, client logos, awards, or guarantees can all strengthen a website. Gather the proof you are comfortable showing publicly.

Know what features you actually need

Make a simple list of required features such as forms, booking, payments, memberships, galleries, downloads, maps, integrations, or gated content. Separate “must have” features from ideas that would simply be nice.

Do not worry about making it perfect first

A good web designer should help organize the project. Your job is to provide accurate information and clear priorities, not to design the whole website before hiring someone.
